When my daughter received the new GOTY 2022 Corinne Tan doll from American Girl, she was delighted. We were even more enthusiastic about the doll’s release when we saw a casting call for leading actors to play Corinne, her sister Gwynn, and her mom Judy in the brand new American Girl: Corinne Tan TV Special! Now that the news has finally been released, we can share our excitement.

On to the latest news! HBO Max and Cartoon Network approved two sixty-minute live action specials based on American Girl’s line of dolls. The first of the two is American Girl: Corinne Tan, and the second hasn’t been given a title yet. Could it be based on the little sister Gwynn, or an entirely different doll? We can’t wait to find out!

Here’s an overview of the story.

13-year-old Corinne Tan (Miya Cech) is dealing with her parents’ recent divorce, while finding herself frustrated by her family doting on her little sister Gwynn (Kai Cech), who is a gifted skater, and feeling that she has no clear skill that makes her stand out. When Corinne comes across a rambunctious dog on the ski slopes, she finds a new purpose in helping to train it to reach its goal as an Avalanche Rescue dog. The special will explore themes of perseverance, self-acceptance, and sisterhood.

Directed by Angela Tortu (Fresh Off the Boat), American Girl: Corinne Tan will also star Michelle Krusiec as their mom, Judy. Executive producers include Fred Soulie and Phil Breman with Mattel Television. Larry Grimaldi, Hannah Pillemer, and Fernando Szew serve as executive producers for MarVista Entertainment. Adam Shepard serves as co-executive producer.

Amy Friedman, head of kids & family programming, Warner Bros. said of the new special, “[t]he live-action specials announced today capture the sweetness, the funniness, the chaos, and the messy imperfect genius of growing up and becoming who you are. Let’s face it, most of us can still relate to all those feelings which makes this content so resonant.” She continued, “[t]hese projects are a reflection of our commitment to bring in more girls and teens to HBO Max and Cartoon Network with authentic, fun, courageous, and emotional stories that speak to kids lives now.”

The television special is currently shooting on location in Alberta, Canada, with a scheduled premiere date is scheduled to premiere this December in the U.S. on Cartoon Network, and will be available on HBO Max the following day.
