Apple TV+ is working on a new limited series ‘Lady in the Lake!’ Find out 5 interesting facts to know about this new show.

The series is based on the novel ‘Lady in the Lake’ by Laura Lippman

Reading crime novel ‘Lady in the Lake’ can give you a head start on discovering what this series is about. Beware of major spoilers by the end of the book though, and avoid reading if you want to be surprised during the show! I won’t share any of them here.

Written by Baltimore area novelist Laura Lipmann, the novel visits the neighborhoods familiar to local readers. From the mentions of the Suburban House deli of Pikesville to the delicious cookies from Bauhof’s Bakery of Woodlawn and the fantastic shopping at the Village of Cross Keys, the book is like a nostalgic scenic drive through the area or a chat with a friend about the memories of her favorite places to visit, but with a compelling crime story unfolding on each page.

It’s also of note to mention that this novel is different from ‘Lady in the Lake’ by Raymond Chandler, which is a classic crime novel that does not involve Baltimore whatsoever.

‘Lady in the Lake’ stars Natalie Portman and Lupita Nyong’o

Natalie Portman will play recently divorced investigative journalist Maddie Schwartz. Lupita Nyong’o is Cleo Sherwood, the murdered African American whose story Maddie wants to bring to justice.

David Johnson III plays officer Percy Davis.

Others who have joined the series include Y’lan Noel (The First Purge), Mikey Madison (Better Things) and Brett Gelman (Stranger Things), although it is unknown at this time what roles they could play. Could Y’lan Noel play the handsome cop Ferdie? Will Brett Gelman play Wally, the journalist who has held onto a childhood crush he had on Maddie? Is Mikey Madison the new younger friend, Judith, that Maddie makes after living on her own? Only time will tell!

The series is directed by Alma Har’el

Alma Har’el will direct the series.

Producers include Michaela Celella, Alma Har’el, Chris Leggett, Laura Lippman, Sophie Mas, Lupita Nyong’o, Boaz Yakin, Julie Gardner, and Nathan Ross.

Filming has begun in the Baltimore area

Crews have been spotted in Pikesville with filming beginning today. My guess is The Park School will be one location since that’s where Maddie’s story takes place in her childhood, but many of the scenes take place downtown. The book also ends with a mention of McDonough, so could that be a location too? We’ll see!

Some hiring will be local

Extras casting takes place through 4 Star Casting, who have been looking for adults and minors for scenes. The paperwork for children who want to work on the movie is extensive, including a statement from a school principal, full vaccination, and a minor work permit.
